Long weekend for beginners

This long weekend course for beginners is designed to give you a complete introduction to keeping bees.

It will give you a comprehensive insight into organic bee-keeping and what it entails, including a hands-on session in the apiary with our bees.

It is a combination of theory and practical demonstration with opportunities to participate at all levels.

The course for beginners will give you answers to key questions for the bee's life cycle and how we can be benefited from it, in particular as far as in the professional bee-keeping is concerned.

This course is suitable for all those who happen to be on holiday in Zakynthos or Kefalonia form April to October 2014. If you have always wondered what bee-keeping is all about, now is your chance to find out! The lecturer for this course is George Toliadis, Agronomist and bee-keeper. Presentations and working with the bees all take place at our little apiary in the fields where a picnic launch is offered.

Course content

Part 1ο : Introduction to bee-keeping , bee-keeping as a hobby, bee-keeping as a profession throughout the world, the importance of bees (theoretical). Detailed presentation of hive parts and bee-keeping tools, clothing and other supplies. Presentation of a bee colony in an observatory hive through glass (practical).

Part 2ο : Biology of bees, anatomy, physiology. biological cycle. Detailed presentation of hive residents and combs. How to be safe when working with bees. How we open a hive, what we look at, how the bee colony works (practical).

Part 3ο : Starting up as a bee-keeper; how many beehives we buy and from where, what kind of books we need. Tasking in the apiary throughout the year (theoretical). Uniting and dividing bee colonies, looking for the Queen, introducing the Queen in a bee colony (practical).

Part 4ο : Bee products and production performance in bee-keeping, cost of supplies and financial planing of bee-keeping venture (theory).Bee product processing; honey extraction, produce pro polis solution production and making bee wax ointment (practical).
